mattnewlands JBF knows his craft, and keeps getting better with each release.

Awesome instrumentation and songwriting combined; plus some great vocals here which really add to the breadth of styles that JBF draws on.

We all knew his prog credentials but this album shows his pop credentials too - just listen to the chorus of On the Day of the Sun.

I enjoy every track here and can’t find fault with the production either, which is also getting better with each release.

Is JBF really a one man band?!

vflp An improvement over the last album, and now with vocals, too!
Focusing on the pandemic and its effects, JB Fairfield has created an album with two essential moods, or directions - sadness at what has transpired, and hope for the future. These two sides are integrated very well (think Jung/Shadow) with JB relying on his signature airy, post-rock style (with influence from a hundred other places) to play with moods as the songs demand.
Better as it goes on - the second half is grand. Favorite track: Turning Away from the Light.

tpmster Do yourself a favour...

Companion piece to JB's The Unbearable Lightness of Being album, this time with the addition of vocal tracks

Terrific instrumentation, arrangements and song-writing remains

Digging that intro & sudden change-up to A Stoner's Ride to Salvation, and the moody atmosphere of The Shadow

Another highlight is Just Breath...so may we now speculate what the "JB" in JB Fairfield stands for...

Album builds to a grand closing track. Take it from me, highly recommended album Favorite track: A Stoner's Ride to Salvation.

When the Rains Come Verse 1 In the wind and the heat As my hopes start to fade In the desert haze, you’re always looking for shade – Looking for the shade. Verse 2 And it’s hot under my feet Hardly a breath of air But then the clouds build, and I realise you care – Now you’re there. Chorus 1 When the rains come – I can’t help but think of you When the rains come – I am drenched in my love for you. Verse 3 In the vast, open plain You can feel completely alone. Without your love, I’m as dry as a bone Dry as a bone. Chorus 2 When the rains come – I can’t help but think of you When the rains come – I am drenched in my love for you. Bridge I can’t help but think of you You’re like a light on the hill I can’t help but think of you Every time when it rains. I can’t help but think of you I can’t help but think of you. Repeat Chorus I can’t help but think of you I can’t help but think of you When the rains come, I think of you.

On the Day of the Sun (Sunnandæg) Verse 1 I’m staring at my feet At the shadow of defeat Where my hopes have run - Have run aground. It’s a quiet place Here behind my face On the Day of the Sun. Chorus 1 All my life I’ve been mistreated The change is now completed My coffee has grown cold! All the world is going backwards My legs don’t take me forwards My words becoming bold! Verse 2 I’m blinded by the light In the dark of night When day is done - Is done and gone. I need this quiet place Here behind my face On the Day of the Sun. Repeat Chorus 1 …On the Day of the Sun. Chorus 2 All my life I’ve been mistreated The change is now completed My coffee’s just so old! All the world is going backwards My legs don’t take me forwards My words becoming bold! Verse 3 It is time tonight To turn from the light To find this space - Behind my face.

Turning away from the light Verse Lurking in the dark, Like a shadow…in the cold and the rain. Moving through the void, An apparition - Wrapped in dullness and pain. Chorus 1 Turn away Turn away Turn away Time to turn away. Chorus 2 Turn away, turn away from the light Turn away, turn away from the light Turn away, turn away from the light Time to turn away.

Mistreated 04:12
Mistreated Verse 1 It came out of nowhere Like a thief in the night How strange it was in those early days Until it started taking over, taking over all of our lives Over everything I see Then you and me… Chorus 1 And I feel we’re all mistreated But I don’t know why. Verse 2 So now we’re deep in it You’d better believe it It’s all we seem to know, these days. Though we all crave for an ending There’s none that I see For you and me… Chorus 2 And I feel we’re all mistreated But I don’t know why And I feel we’ve all been mistreated But I don’t know why.

Take it from Me Verse 1 Why don’t you take it from me? Take my sympathy… Why don’t you take it from me? (Did you note my empathy?) Chorus 1 I don’t know how you’re feeling but you seem to be so sad…so sad. I only know how I feel - All alone and bad. Verse 2 Why don’t you take it from me? Take my sympathy… Why don’t you take it from me? (I’m known for my chivalry.) Chorus 2 I don’t know how you’re feeling but you seem to be so sad…so sad. I only know how I feel I only know it seems unreal You don’t know how much guilt I feel Why don’t you take it from me? Verse 3 Why don’t you take it from me? Take my sympathy… Why don’t you take it from me? (I mean it honestly.) Repeat Chorus 2 Verse 4 Why don’t you take it from me? My threadbare sympathy… Why don’t you take it from me? (In a perfect symmetry.) Chorus 3 I don’t know how you’re feeling but I know it’s pretty bad…my bad. I only know how I feel I only know it seems unreal You don’t know how grateful I feel As you just take it from me. Ending You don’t know how blessed I feel You simply take it from me!

about

In this, my second full length album, I have moved on from purely instrumental music to include a number of songs. Like the first album, though, this album has been strongly influenced by the impact of COVID-19 in all our lives.

What a strange world we live in. Who would have thought two years ago I would have written a ballad about a virus ("Mistreated")?

During the pandemic, we have been urged to be cautious, sensible and mature, but sometimes it is OK to grieve for things which have changed and ask, “Why us?” “Why me?”

But it has not been all doom and gloom, however. During moments of good fortune, it is especially important and healthy now to feel gratitude for being alive and that there is love in the world.

Most of the songs are my personal journey to find some meaning in the chaos. That includes trying to find the courage to explore some of the shadowy places in my mind for answers. It’s a challenging journey, so this song cycle concludes by acknowledging all we need to do sometimes is just breathe!

The final song on the album is a 10 minute+ fantasia focussing on conflict and reconciliation, through which I learned that when we make our peace with others sometimes we also make peace with ourselves.

Take good care of yourselves, everyone…

about

JB Fairfield Brisbane, Australia

JB Fairfield is my solo musical project.

As a solo artist I find inspiration in many places - from medieval music to the present - and across prog, electronic, classical, psychedelic and post rock genres.

Various haphazard (and surprising) combinations of these styles occur as I try to understand myself and my world through the magic of music!
